Jobspotting: 56 Tourism Positions and a Key CVB Appointment

Visit St. Pete/Clearwater has announced the appointment of Steve Hayes as CEO following a nationwide search that began in February. Hayes spent 25 years in Tampa Bay tourism marketing before joining Visit Pensacola as president in 2013. He takes up the new role in mid-December 2019. Visit St. Pete/Clearwater is the tourism bureau for Pinellas County, Florida.

In January, former Visit St. Pete/Clearwater CEO David Downing announced his resignation. Pinellas County Commission announced plans in April to hire Jim Dean, who previously held leadership positions at Busch Gardens and SeaWorld, but Dean later decided to accept another job offer.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority has appointed experienced Hawaii hotel executive Pattie Herman as the new vice president of marketing and product development from Dec. 2, 2019. She has spent more than four decades in the Hawaii tourism industry and currently serves as director of sales and marketing for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa.

Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau seeks a digital agency to lead the overall digital and website strategy, website design, CRM program and other digital initiatives, as well as a web development agency with Kentico development experience to lead the development, testing and launch of all digital initiatives, including marketing automation implementation. Both agencies will work in collaboration with the GMCVB and partner agencies in the development and optimization of a world-class website and digital programs, further accelerating Greater Miami and The Beaches’ growth as a year-round international travel destination. Banish pesky fees. Legislation has been introduced in Congress that would prohibit hotels from advertising a room rate that doesn’t disclose additional fees. The Hotel Advertising Transparency Act of 2019 is intended to prohibit hotels from advertising room rates that fail to disclose additional fees during the search process. Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), co-sponsored the bill with Congressman Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE) noting that for 2019, hotels could collect upwards of $3 billion in hidden fees.

Shortsighted? In August, the New Orleans City Council unanimously passed a ban on Airbnb and similar short term rentals of whole houses that are not owner-occupied. There are similar regulations in San Francisco, Santa Monica, and New York City. Expedia Group, the parent company of similarly affected home rental sites Vrbo and HomeAway, issued a statement calling the restrictions “shortsighted.”

CrowdRiff, headquartered in Toronto, has been ranked 40 out of 400 on the new list of Canada’s Top Growing Companies. CrowdRiff earned its spot based on three years of revenue growth of 1,274%. Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau will be the presenting sponsor when the city hosts six days for the first-ever Pride of the Americas on April 21-26, 2020. The historic event brings two continents and 35 countries together for an epic beach festival and fireworks display, a parade, fashion shows, arts festival, A-list entertainment, sunset concerts, top DJs and drag brunches as well as a conference and symposium on important human rights issues. Four years ago, the city became the world’s first destination to create a transgender marketing campaign. Now the GFLCVB includes trans, lesbian, gay and straight people in all its mainstream marketing initiatives.

Tourism Santa Fe has launched a new tourism campaign aimed at convincing potential visitors they’ll have an “emotional experience.” The tag line is “Uncover Your Different,” meant to tap into those experiences. The $1.5 million advertising campaign was launched Sept. 16 and will continue into 2020. The campaign touches on digital, social and print advertisements plus Hulu. On the 130-mile coastline of North Carolina, The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau has partnered with Milwaukee-based Hoffman York to handle paid media planning and buying, digital creative, email marketing, and website research.

Inbound India: In late September, Brand USA held its eighth mission with a delegation of 53 representatives from 38 U.S. tourism organizations to cover key accounts and media in Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi.

It’s not a good look for the “trusted” data-measurement firm that covers media and web traffic. Comscore has settled fraud charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission and will pay a $5 million penalty, widely reported last week. The SEC said Comscore inflated its revenue by $50 million and falsified key performance metrics to mislead investors. Read more from the SEC here.

Amsterdam, famously beleaguered by overtourism, will have the highest hotel taxes in Europe when the Dutch capital adds €3 per person (about US$3) per night in addition to the current 7% room tax.

For comparison purposes, a twin-bedded room with shared bath at Amsterdam’s one-star Rembrandt Square Hotel for €132.46 on Booking.com will attract taxes of €15.97. In Italy, at a five-star deluxe Rome hotel which costs €815, taxes are lower than the one-star Amsterdam hotel, at €14.

Visit San Antonio is inviting local storytellers to create internet videos about what they believe makes San Antonio unique. Since the marketing initiative was launched on Sept. 10, the DMO has received more than 45 submissions for the project, called Visit San Antonio TV. The project grew from a desire for more video content, said Andres Munoz, VP of marketing communications and tourism. Visit San Antonio is accepting submissions through Oct. 17, after which it will choose the winning storytellers and develop two series with four episodes each.

Collapsed: The 21st century has been unkind to Thomas Cook, the pioneer in vacation packages. The iconic 178-year-old travel company, founded in 1841 by a British cabinetmaker by that name, initially conducted rail tours around the UK. Now 600,000 unhappy holidaymakers are currently in-destination, 34 aircraft are grounded and 22,000 jobs are at risk across the company’s 17 brands. In the end, talks this past weekend produced failure despite £9 billion in annual bookings and a £900 million investment from Fosun in China. How did digital evolution, or lack thereof, play a role? Drake Hotel, Chicago, 1920

CEO and son of founder Conrad, Barron Hilton, 91, has died. As the most recognized name in the industry, “Hilton” became synonymous with the word “hotel” for much of the 20th century and beyond.

Hilton President & CEO Chris Nassetta was among 15 travel industry leaders calling for congressional reauthorization of Brand USA funding at last week’s biannual U.S. Travel Association CEO Roundtable. Last year, Congress agreed to extend the implementation of the $10 ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) fee connected to the Visa Waiver Program from 2021 to 2027. However, it diverted those revenues to the general fund, not to Brand USA, putting the agency’s future in jeopardy at a time when decreasing inbound market share means a loss jobs in the tens of thousands. The world’s largest network “hotelier” of sorts, Airbnb now says it will go public sometime “during 2020.”

A rare, profitable “unicorn,” Airbnb was co-founded in 2008 by Brian Chesky and is currently valued at $31 billion by private investors.

TripAdvisor has been cracking down on phony reviews. The travel mega-site has reported significant progress in improving the reliability of user reviews by policing postings believed to be fraudulent or paid for. TripAdvisor is getting lots of attention for its first-of-a-kind transparency. In a 29-page report, the company details the procedure involving analysis of 66 million reviews in 2018 using advanced fraud detection technology plus additional human assessment by content moderators. Stephen Cluskey, CEO of accessibility solution provider Mobility Mojo, identifies a “silver tsumani.” As the population ages, the current 14 million people living with a disability in the USA will grow to become roughly one-quarter of the total tourism market. Virgin Hotels US is a leader, Cluskey told Skift Forum last week.

TravelAbility Summit is the inaugural conference on this topic, produced by eTourism Summit founder Jake Steinman, taking place in San Francisco, Nov. 12-13, 2019.

End of an era: Amtrak is killing off the train’s tradition of long-distance dining cars. Say goodbye to Railroad French Toast and white tablecloths; all aboard for pre-packaged meals.

In a new scientific paper, Google claims to have reached a world-first, a huge computing milestone, “quantum supremacy,” in which capability far surpasses today’s traditional computers. Seen briefly on NASA.com, and then removed, the report created lots of excitement. Top Microsoft engineers are among those drawing comparisons to help us understand the scientific leap, saying that the abacus and today’s computers are more closely aligned than today’s computers and quantum computing.

Huh? Because we certainly cannot explain it at all, for more on what this means, surf the web or try clicking on this YouTube explainer video already viewed by 3.5 million people that takes a look inside a hermetically-sealed glass lab.

Facebook has just suspended “tens of thousands” of apps that potentially misused customer data since the Cambridge Analytica data scandal came to light in 2018. The suspended apps came from roughly 400 developers, sparking off fresh privacy fears. In July, Facebook was hit with a $5 billion fine by the FTC; will there be more penalties?

A distraction?

Facebook is rolling out ad formats that use polls, games and augmented reality to “encourage a playful experience between people and businesses.” Using fewer words and more GIFS, emojis, stickers, and face filters, the Facebook blog post shows an example to demonstrate trying on 38 different lipstick colors.

And this happened. It was a “nice meeting.”

We’ve Got News For You

John Groh, president/CEO of Illionois’ Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, adds on a new volunteer role of board chair of Destinations International Foundation, a 24-member group. The foundation is a nonprofit that provides education, research, advocacy and leadership development opportunities as a supporting entity to Destinations International, the world’s largest resource for official destination organizations, convention and visitors bureaus and tourism boards.

What’s a DSO? Sonoma County Tourism has embraced the transition from destination marketing organization to destination stewardship organization, announced in last week’s annual meeting. SCT has contracted with Coraggio Group of Portland, OR to help develop the master plan (reported in The Travel Vertical, 8/6/2019) described as “a roadmap for becoming a region that attracts travelers from around the world while at the same time safeguarding the needs of local residents and businesses,” according to the Sonoma Index-Tribune. About the initiative, President/CEO Claudia Vecchio said, “Becoming a DSO doesn’t shift dollars. Becoming a DSO shifts the messaging about the destination to both leisure and business audiences, and creates additional opportunities to appeal to potential domestic and international visitors.” See this week’s Visit California article here and read more here.

In Greater Atlanta, Jennifer Rosa was named director of the Madison-Morgan Convention & Visitors Bureau. She joins from Burson Cohn & Wolfe and was previously with Hemsworth Communications, a firm specializing in tourism and hospitality.

In Indiana, Noble County Convention and Visitors Bureau has promoted Emily Schneider to executive director. She joined the organization in January and had been serving as interim executive director since April.

Jane Zhang, known as “Dolphin Princess” for her high vocal register, will lead Brand USA‘s biggest-ever campaign on the Weibo next month. The campaign, “Feel the USA“, is being filmed in Las Vegas, New York and San Francisco. Zhang has 42 million Weibo followers. Brand USA declined to say how much it was investing in the campaign but marketing chief Tom Garzilli said in a statement that it is “the biggest consumer initiative we’ve had with Sina Weibo since we began working together five years ago.” To read more about the China marketing efforts of several DMOs, click here.

In related news, San Diego Tourism Authority and Brand USA have a first-of-its-kind U.S. partnership with Fliggy and Alipay, the digital payment platforms operated Alibaba Group’s travel services platform, Ant Financial.

The City of Miami Beach has launched a new digital portal, “Filmed on the Beach” so people can get to know and love the city’s film history (“Godfather II,” “Scarface,” “Bad Boys,” and more) and locations, right from the comfort of home. The website also provides contacts for grants and funding support for filmmakers to help bring productions to the area.

Great minds think alike.

San Francisco Travel Association has produced a list of their movie great film locations. From the pretty Pacific Heights home of “Mrs. Doubtfire” to the Painted Ladies in “Full House” and from the crazy hills in “Bullitt” chase scenes to the Alcatraz Island prison fortress in “The Rock,” the classic film and TV location rundown is found here.

Iowa Nice Guy is a local actor starring in the Catch Des Moines campaign, “The S’s Are Silent.” “Every city says they have great food, great art, and unexpected attractions,” said Greg Edwards, President & CEO at Greater Des Moines CVB. “So we need to be creative and innovative to create a sense of place, especially when we don’t have mountains or oceans…” Ben Handfelt, VP Marketing, said, “Being a best-kept-secret is overrated. Discover Long Island is partnering with eight regional Industrial Development Agencies to apply for a National Grid Cooperative Marketing grant that, if approved, would seek to attract new business to the island. The collaborative effort uses the DMO’s new tourism branding, “BeLONG on Long Island” as an umbrella message. “Research confirms that Long Island is a brand with strong name recognition, and it has been proven that increasing visitation to a destination leads to a more favorable perception and, ultimately increased economic opportunities,” said Kristen Jarnagin, president & CEO of Discover Long Island.

The Twitterverse is sad to hear that National Geographic Traveler, a magazine founded in 1984, is folding with the December/January issue. The publication is owned and being shuttered by Disney which acquired it from the former 21st Century Fox. National Geographic Society founded National Geographic Magazine in 1888.

Long live glossy magazines! Visit Oakland has published 75,000 copies of their shiny new 74-page “Inspiration Guide” featuring Oaklanders for distribution in the Bay Area. “We are hoping to open visitors’ eyes to the spirit of Oakland and ensure that they don’t miss out on anything—from our extraordinary attractions to our diverse culinary scene, annual events and outdoor adventures,” said Mark Everton, president & CEO. Also available as a digital magazine on the website, the publication was produced by Diablo Publications, an employee-owned local publisher with a custom media division.

Effective immediately, United Airlines makes MileagePlus frequent flyer miles into a forever thing. Previously, the loyalty program expired unused earned miles within 18 months. Meantime, can you really use them? United joins American and Delta in a global trend to hybrid dynamic pricing for loyalty rewards. U.S. airlines are struggling to balance loyalty with overall load factors that have reached historic highs.

Similarly, Marriott’s Bonvoy introduces a three-tier model as a function of demand starting Sept. 14, 2019. Marriott’s peak season hotel rooms will cost up to 33% more in points during high occupancy periods, as seen in this chart.

Some good news from the world’s largest hotel group, Marriott (7,000 hotels worldwide with 1.4 million rooms) pledges to do away with tiny single-use plastic for toiletries by 2020. The company estimates that when the transition is complete, it will prevent around 500 million small bottles, or 1.7 million pounds of plastic, from entering landfills every year. Tempted.com is the first travel startup, a digital travel platform dedicated to providing worldwide adult-only, kid-free accommodations, restaurants and activities. The website shows partnerships with Booking.com, TripAdvisor, Get Your Guide, Klook and Orbitz. Launched in San Francisco by Mariam Bulin-Diarra, the Founder/CEO said, “…We have a special section, Pride, dedicated to LGBT travelers, and we are also planning to add cannabis tours in our travel catalogue.”

In seven countries, Instagram is already testing a move to hide the number of “likes” each post gets. (The Travel Vertical, 8/13/2019). Now, Facebook is also considering a test removing “like” counts on the Facebook platform, reports TechCrunch reports. While making people feel less concerned about the accumulation of post “like” counts, TechCrunch suggests such a move could also encourage moves away from Facebook by users.

Ugh. Apple apologized for privacy mishaps surrounding Siri. The company said it would no longer retain audio recordings of the voice app’s interactions. According to Bloomberg News, “The announcement follows criticism of the iPhone maker and other technology giants for employing humans to listen to recordings of user interactions with voice assistants in a bid to improve the product.”

Google settled with the FTC for more than $150 million last week to resolve a probe into whether YouTube collected and disclosed information on children under 13 without parental permission.

DMO Central: People, Places, News and Jobs

Duane Parrish of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has been named national State Tourism Director of the Year for 2019. The announcement was made at the U.S. Travel Association’s ESTO conference, held last week in Austin. Parrish has been in the role since 2011. Parrish also recently took on the chair of the board of directors at Travel South USA.

Mike Pistana is the new vice president of the Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau, a division of the chamber of commerce. He replaces Kim Phillips, who held the position for 16 years before leaving to head the Texas Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus earlier this year.

Anne Madison is stepping down from her position as chief strategy and communications officer for Brand USA. Madison, one of the earliest senior executives at the organization, has served more than seven years in her role. She will be taking on a consultancy role with Brand USA while pursuing a “career bucket list” and “a desire and need to focus on some important personal commitments.”

In London, MMGY Hills Balfour has appointed Caroline Moultrie, former executive vice president of the World Travel & Tourism Council, as managing director. Moultrie will be tasked with evolving the firm’s suite of full-service client offerings, as well as growing the business in line with the company’s ambitious plans to expand globally. Moultrie was previously group marketing director of Manchester Airport Group, head of direct marketing at Monarch Airlines and worked in corporate sales at Virgin Atlantic.

Mike Waterman, most recently president of Visit Houston, has been appointed chief sales officer for Visit Orlando. The decision not to renew his contract was made by Brenda Bazan, president and CEO of Houston First. Visit Houston (formerly the Houston CVB) was structurally aligned within Houston First five years ago and the employees became employees of Houston First. However, the bureau and Houston First remain separate entities. Waterman came to Visit Houston in 2015 following more than 20 years in senior sales and marketing positions from Renaissance Hotels and Resorts, and then Marriott International.

NEW: Registration is now open for the International Marketing Forum, a one-day event that provides the tools, research, and insights to help you initiate or ramp up your global marketing. Experts will lead sessions to help DMOs, their destination partners and agencies to tackle the challenges of creating a global strategy. In Marina Del Rey, CA on Feb. 25, 2020.

Also at ESTO, two DMOs collected awards from Brand USA for their storytelling videos. Recognition goes to Destination DC for their five-part video series, “Explore The Arts District in Washington, D.C.” (seen here) and the New Mexico Tourism Department for their 13-part series, “New Mexico True Stories” (seen here).

Snapchat has designed pricey new stainless steel glasses and is hiring an LA-based social media strategist to help market them as cool. In 2016, Snapchat’s first glasses cost $130, and the company has since written off $40 million in losses attributed to unsold pairs. The second version at $200 also failed to gain traction.

TripAdvisor has rolled out a Wi-Fi service for restaurants designed to build their email lists and send review reminders to guests. From $69 USD per Any of the 4 million restaurants on the site, which compromise half of its listings, can install the plan from $69 USD/month thereby giving customers free access. When asked if TripAdvisor may extend this offering to tour and activity suppliers, a TripAdvisor executive said, “The agreement that we have set up with our vendor today, a company called Captini, is not exclusive to our restaurants product line.” Read more here.

Home to Canyonland and Arches national parks, Utah’s Moab Area Travel Council has introduced an initiative to flip the role of destination marketing from attracting visitors to educating tourists about protecting local resources. The dedicated site, doitlikeamoablocal.com, features six basic tips such as wearing the right shoes and carrying out trash. The media strategy includes display and video intercept ads, as well as native articles on TripAdvisor and ADARA. In-market advertising will run on TripAdvisor, while branded collateral will appear on table tents, street banners and vinyl window decals in Moab restaurants, bars, hotel lobbies and other local businesses.

Automattic Inc., the owner of online publishing tool WordPress, has acquired Tumblr for peanuts, or less than $3 million. The seller was Verizon, owner of Yahoo since 2017, which had spent $1.1 billion to acquire Tumblr in 2013.

Facebook has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Who’s in Town, an Instagram location-tracking app. The controversial app is a service that monitors the locations of people you follow on Instagram. By recording this data over time, the app is able to build a detailed map of people’s movements. “People don’t realize what they’re sharing,” the app owner told Wired. Creepy?
